August Heat and August Moon
August Heat
From theguardian.com, ‘Lifestyle’ page, and posted by ‘Invisible Woman’
A page I love reading. Today’s topic was
‘How hot are you and what do you do to keep your cool?
She always writes well and amusingly,
this time about coping with the heat as an ‘older’ woman,
‘Sweating is one of those things that
we just don’t talk about, but put hot flushes together with a summer heat-wave
and it’s something many of us have to worry about.’ And she offers a great
number of hints, recipes and suggestions. I've not yet tried putting my PJs or underwear in the freezer, but am considering it!

Today my husband informed me it would be one degree
hotter than yesterday but then the temperature for the rest of the week would
be 28! It was sweet of him and I know that he is trying to please me, knowing I
do not like the hot weather! However I have looked up the BBC Weather Report
and know the weather for Lemnos will be 32
today, then the next few days it will be 33, 31, 34, 32.
The temperatures on the island are usually steady and only gradually change from month to month. We tend to say it won’t cool down until after August 15. So I await any slow cooling down of the weather.
I’m managing with our air-conditioned bedroom where
we set the temperature at 27, so we can sleep. And, I organize the day by doing
garden work and house work early, and taking a walk or going for a swim before
10 o’clock. So this year it has been much easier to cope here.
Meanwhile I’ve just had a phone call from Australia where in Melbourne they are ‘enjoying’ one of their
coldest winters. A neighbour phoned to tell me that her lawn was white with
frost every morning this past week, and although it rarely snows in Melbourne they had a
light sprinkling of snow!
Rather a shock for my grandchildren who were recently here swimming in warm seas, and had to return to school, and heavy jumpers.

The plusses of Greek heat, sitting by the sea under an umbrella |
There
has been some excitement here recently about the full phase of the moon last
Sunday. It was about 31,000 miles (50,000 kilometers) closer to Earth than it
is during its farthest point in orbit. On average, the moon circles the Earth
from approximately 238,855 miles (384,400 km) away.
"This
is the largest, brightest, closest moon in 3.5 years, and it's happening the
same hour in which it's full," Slooh Community Observatory astronomer Bob
Berman said on the internet.
This magical August full moon was celebrated across Greece with
many museums and Greek archaeological sites staying open until midnight, and
presenting various events free of charge on August 10.
